Why Topic Vocabulary Matters in Task 2
The Lexical Resource criterion assesses the use of topic-appropriate, precise words in your answer. Simple words can be appropriate too; the aim is precise, suitable expression of the intended meaning, not collecting rare words. For example, saying technology is advancing at a remarkable pace instead of technology grows fast is more effective.
Learn words not one by one but as collocations: a balanced diet, screen time, public health. In this way you are less likely to make word-combination mistakes when building a sentence.
In this material two closely related topics — technology and health — are given together, because you can also practise questions that combine the two areas: the effect of smartphones on young people's health, the role of artificial intelligence in medicine, or the effect of online life on physical activity. Don't memorise the example sentences in the tables; adapt them to your own ideas and use them in new contexts.
Core Technology Vocabulary
The expressions below are the foundation of the technology topic; they can be used comfortably in both the introduction and the main paragraphs.
| Phrase | Meaning | Example sentence |
|---|---|---|
| digital devices | electronic gadgets such as phones and computers | Digital devices have become an essential part of daily life. |
| screen time | time spent looking at screens | Parents should limit children's screen time before bed. |
| remote work | working from home or another place away from the office | Remote work allows employees to live far from the office. |
| artificial intelligence (AI) | computer systems that perform tasks needing human intelligence | Artificial intelligence can detect some diseases earlier than doctors. |
| social media platforms | websites and apps for sharing content and messages | Social media platforms often spread misinformation about health. |
| access to information | the ability to find or obtain facts | The internet gives patients instant access to information about symptoms. |
| technological advancements | progress in technology | Rapid technological advancements have transformed medical care. |
| a sedentary lifestyle | a way of living with little physical activity | Heavy use of technology contributes to a sedentary lifestyle. |
Note: you can try each expression in two different contexts. This is a practice method; two uses do not guarantee that a word becomes active vocabulary. Check meaning, grammatical construction and appropriacy.
Core Health Vocabulary
Choose from these eight expressions according to the question and intended meaning; not every health essay needs all of them. You can practise combining them with technology words when appropriate.
| Phrase | Meaning | Example sentence |
|---|---|---|
| public health | the health of the population as a whole | Governments fund public health campaigns to reduce smoking. |
| a balanced diet | eating the right amounts of different foods | A balanced diet is the foundation of good health. |
| mental health | a person's emotional and psychological wellbeing | Constant online comparison can damage teenagers' mental health. |
| obesity | the condition of being seriously overweight | Obesity rates are rising in many developed countries. |
| life expectancy | the average number of years a person is expected to live | Life expectancy has increased thanks to modern medicine. |
| preventive care | medical care that stops illness before it starts | Preventive care, such as vaccination, saves both lives and money. |
| the healthcare system | the services and institutions that provide medical care | A well-funded healthcare system serves all citizens fairly. |
| chronic diseases | long-lasting illnesses | Chronic diseases such as diabetes are linked to poor diet. |
Practice idea: build your own sentences with pairs like remote work + mental health or artificial intelligence + early diagnosis.
