Linking ideas with because and although
Learn to tell a reason from an unexpected contrast.

The key idea
Because gives a reason. Although creates a contrast that shows the expected result did not happen.
- I stayed home because I was tired.
- I went out although I was tired.
In this structure, both are followed by a full clause: a subject and a verb. Don't use Although … but … together to link the same pair of ideas.

Although the course was difficult, I enjoyed it.
Enjoying a difficult course is an unexpected contrast. When the although clause comes first, we put a comma after it.
I enjoyed the course because the teacher explained things clearly.
Here, by contrast, the reason for enjoying it is given.

Answer and explanation
- because — the rain is the reason for taking an umbrella.
- Although — they played outside despite the rain.
Correction: Although I was busy, I called her. The but is unnecessary here. Another correct version: I was busy, but I called her.
