The key idea
Cohesive writing is not created only by furthermore and however. First work out the relationship between the two ideas: addition, reason, result or contrast?
However gives a contrast, therefore a result, for example an example. Even a correctly spelled linking word cannot rescue a wrong relationship.
Words like This, these, they can reduce repetition, but it must be clear what they refer to. The reader should be able to find the link easily by looking at the previous sentence.
See an example
Longer version: The course was expensive. Therefore, I could not afford it, but I enrolled for free because of a scholarship.
Clearer: The course was expensive. However, a scholarship allowed me to enrol without paying tuition fees.
The main relationship is that an expected obstacle is removed by a scholarship. Cutting the unnecessary detour makes it easier to read. The first version is not a logical contradiction; the second presents the main relationship more directly.
Now you try
Choose the right linking word.
- The bus service improved. ___, more commuters began using it. (As a result / However)
- The flat is small. ___, it is close to campus. (For example / However)
Which two features are contrasted in the second sentence?
A personal draft. It is not saved when you leave or automatically graded.

Answer and explanation
- As a result — the result of the improvement is given.
- However — the small size is contrasted with the convenient location.
Delete the linking word and read the two sentences. If you can state the relationship in your own words, choosing the right transition is easier. There is no need to put a separate linking word at the start of every sentence.
How do I check my writing at the end?
